A PART OF AMERICA DIED
Someone killed a policeman today.
And a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect.
Will be buried close by his side.
The culprit who shot him will stand up in court.
With counsel demanding his rights.
And a widowed mother must work for her kids.
While spending many long and lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a a battlefield.
As if he's gone off to war.
And the flag he loved will fly at half mast.
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, someone killed a policeman today.
It could happen in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors.
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street.
You'll find him at each rookie's side.
For he answered the call, and gave us his all.
And a part of America died.
